Annually, the Irresistible Iota Alpha chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc., host a 5K Breast Cancer Walk/Run entitled G.A.M.M.A.S (Greek Angles Making Miracles Amongst Society). The walk this year was held on March 22, 2009, on the campus of Florida State University and was held in memory of our President’s Mother, Jacqueline Torres, who passed away from breast cancer this past November. Our earnings from the walk this year exceeded $2000 in sponsorships, donations, and participants and all of the funds were donated to Breast Treatment Task Force (B.T.T.F.) a group that helps women who are financially indigent. Our success was captured by news stations in Florida and can be viewed at http://www.wtxl.tv/global/story.asp?s=10054321.
Also, the Irresistible Iota Alpha chapter won Most Improved Chapter at our campus Greek Awards night and our very own alum Stephanie “Dimensions” Christian was inducted into the newly created Greek Hall of Fame, highlighting her achievements as an undergraduate and alumna.
There have been some recent changes with the National Board of Directors. The board has accepted the resignation of the National President, Matielyn Jones, who has decided to step down for personal reasons.
As per Sigma Lambda Gamma National Constitution, Article VII, Sec. 5, the appointed President shall be Juanita McGrew for the remainder of the 2008-2010 term. This appointment was voted on by the National Board of Directors. Ms. McGrew was the Vice-President of Alumnae during the 2006-2008 National Board of Directors term and was serving as the Vice-President of Collegiate Operations for the 2008-2010 National Board of Directors.
The Vice-President of Collegiate Operations position has been appointed by the National Board of Directors to Nisha Reyes, former Southeast Regional Director and Vice-President of Program Development for the 2008-2010 National Board of Directors. Ms. Reyes will serve as the Vice-President of Collegiate Operations for the 2008-2010 National Board of Directors.
The National Board of Directors has decided to have the Vice-President of Program Development position remain vacant at this point in time. Should there be a need for the position to be occupied; the National Board of Directors will appoint a qualified sister accordingly. The position shall remain vacant due to having staff available to assist in this position.
We would like to assure you that the recent changes will not affect the overall vision of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. and the empowerment of women. We will continue to lead the organization towards the fulfillment of our mission statement. The National Board of Directors looks forward to accomplishing our goals and serving the membership for the remainder of our term. We look forward to seeing the undergraduate membership at Retreat 2009 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and our alumnae membership at the Alumni-Get-Away 2009 in San Antonio, Texas.
